Have you hit your creative limits in GarageBand? Dec 25, 2018  What DAW to choose: Studio One 4 vs Logic Pro X. Hello, So I finally decided to produce music. I've played with GarageBand to decide if Logic Pro X is an option. In some ways it's easy and slick, but some things I find odd and goofy. I just installed Studio One 4 eval last night. I've not worked with it for long yet, but right away I can. Nov 01, 2013 This is essentially correct, Garageband uses the same audio engine as Logic. If you recorded and mixed the same exact way and used the same plugins set the same way, your stems/songs would for the most part, sound the same. There may be slight differences because Logc may have a few settings Garageband doesn't.like 'Pan Law'. Not only does the GarageBand interface have almost the exact same style and feel as Logic Pro X but looking at the control bar across the top of the screen, you might notice it even includes some of the exact same features.

As music production gets faster an easier, choosing between ableton vs logic pro x comes down to a few basic principals. Even though Ableton Live 10 can stand on it’s on, it’s worth considering these two giants. Ableton or Logic?

The Differences between two titan music programs- Ableton and Logic Pro X

Ableton vs Logic pro x has been a common question from many producers. Music production has become more relaxed and easier because of the rise of a great number of excellent music programs and DAW (Digital Audio Workstations) available. Like the excellent recording software SamplitudeMusic Studio and Acid Pro, the competition couldn’t get any more crazy! And over the past few years music programs have only gotten better too. You can make complete tracks and records using most of the tools out there. That being said, there are some DAW out there that seem to outshine others. With so many available digital audio workstations out there on the market, it’s hard to find the one that fits you. Ableton has proven itself live and on stage. Logic constantly is referenced by top music producers as a go to music program.

So, how do you decide?

It seems like the big question is which one is right for you? If you’re anything like me you want to use the best possible software available. By installing the right Digital Audio Workstation on your MAC or PC, you can record, arrange, edit and mix a track for making your final production. But of course you want to use something fun and something that doesn’t get in the way of creativity.

What I consider a good DAW:

  • Ease of use
  • Mac and Windows compatability
  • Stability
  • Multi – core support
  • Friendly Virtual Instrument support
  • Good slection of stock audio effects plugins
  • Good use of ram and hard drive space
  • easy functions
  • Unlimited multi tracks
  • favorable export and import audio controls

Ableton Live and Logic Pro X are two widely used and popular DAWs. In this writing we will focus on comparing Ableton vs Logic.

Ableton Live:

Fl Studio

Ableton Live, a music sequencer and DWA that can be used on both MAC and PC. The present version of the music program is Ableton 9 that was released in 2013. The application was designed on the DJ’ing and ESM (Electronic Dance Music) in mind.

One of the astonishing features of the program is its user interface. After installing and opening the program, you will find an excellent user-friendly session-view that helps you to store your audio clips easily. You can also add folders from your MAC or PC easily.

Other talents of this DAW

The program allows you to switch sounds within seconds. As we consider Ableton vs Logic pro x, you can get your drum pattern quickly without re-sequencing the audio pattern with live. Apart from these, you can also create an original soundtrack by using the audio and MIDI effects of the Ableton Program. Finally, you can create a track and save it as a template for future use in Ableton. Additionally, this DAW has been proven to be an excellent choice for live bands and performers. It has a solid and stable host for Virtual Instruments like Kontakt and Spectrasonics. I consider this a solid Digital Audio Workstation as we talk about Ableton vs Logic.

Ableton Live Sessions View.

The sessions view is something totally unique to Ableton live. It allows you to store clips of audio and midi to then trigger then in different combinations. This helps you to come up with arrangement ideas for the music you produce. If you’ve use FL studio this might be a bit familiar to you. Playing a pattern and adding new patterns with the play cue to try and come up with something cool.

Another cool thing I like about ableton is the “Places” section to the left of the sessions view. The Places section allows you to make shortcuts to folders of samples that are store on the hard drive of your computer. You can create a shortcut to basically any folder on you Mac or PC just by adding the folder by click the “add folder” just below the places section. You can then simply drag a sample right into the sessions view for immediate use. This really sets the bar high when it comes to workflow. Being a creative person we all know how important workflow is.

Usability and Speed

Another excellent thing with Ableton is the preset send and return tracks. These setting will make it super simple to put reverb or delay onto any of the tracks really quickly. Again, workflow is highlighted with Ableton as you can see. Take a look at the dials at the bottom of the sessions view and you’ll see how easy it is to adjust your levels. After spending sometime finding your favorite effects, reverbs, and delays, my advice would be to save it as a template for later use. This way when you start a new song you can do it with one of your templates. This speeds up your workflow and frees time for you to be more creative.

Pricing of Ableton Live:

There are three different versions and pricing structures for ableton live. You have the “Intro to Live” which I tend to believe to be a great start if you just getting into the software for the first time. The standard version comes with most all the bells and whistles you’d expect from any professional DAW. The Suite version will come with additional stock material as well as sounds, samples and effects not found in the intro versions. The pricing structure below is as of Jan 2018: so they may change.

Logic Pro X:

One of the first things that caught my attention using Logic for the first time was that it came with the Yamaha Motif sounds. My first thought was like, whatever! But when I used them and tested it out I was presently surprised.

Their sample of the Motif was absolutely phenomenal to say the least. This fact alone was a huge factor in my purchasing it. I grabbed Ableton for a few other reasons. But Logic Pro is closely related to Pro tools in terms of being “industry professional”.

Garageband Vs Logic X

Not to say that it works anything like Pro Tools. It’s just one of those DAWs that has been tested widely in the market.

If you do a combination of music production and recording, Logic is well round and ready for the tast. Logic also has a fair price. Just under $200. Quick Swipe comping tool of the program makes it as an excellent tool for creating audio. You can quickly compile which section you should include in your audio.

One of the first things you’re gonna notice in Por X is the new and improved GUI. The appearance looks a lot different than the earlier versions and it may take just a little time getting used to. Personally I think its I bit more modern. And the mixer view seems pretty easy to get around with. You can also customize the look of the main window to better fit your own taste. Go to -> Logic pro-> preferences, and select general, then click the display tab. In this display you can change the color of the background.

Color control

Garageband Vs Logic X Download

The catch is that it’s only grey scale. So you can’t make it purple, or brown, or yellow. You can simply just make it more or less grey. I laughed at this too! That being said, the grey scale adjustments do have a pretty strong effect on the view. You can make it pretty bright or really dark.

There are some other visual presets you might want to check out too. But in a nutshell, you can pretty much change the overall feel of the background if you wanted to. Additionally, the grid lines could be adjusted to your taste if you needed. Something you might want to check out. A bit different than how Ableton vs Logic compare.

Apart from this excellent tool, Logic Pro has the option of Smart Control ( that can be brought up by pressing “B”) where you can use several plug-in options efficiently. In other applications, you need to open the plug-ins that require screen space. In Logic Pro, you can access a selection of plug-in controls using the Smart Control option. Everything pretty much works out the box with Logic.

The lay out has change a little in the new Pro X version. Also the channel strips signal flows seems to make a whole lot more since too. You’ll notice that your inputs are on the top of the channel strip rather than the bottom. As was on Logic 9. It’s the same way in Pro Tools and really it just makes more since when you think about it. The interface is simply cleaner. Another really big thin about the new Logic is flex pitch. As of version 9 it used to be flex time. This is an excellent tool and you should definitely check it out!

Stock Plugins and Effects

Many of the stock audio plugins are excellent. They are widely used in the industry. How this compares Ableton vs Logic could be more of a personal preference. But we have found more of our studio work completed using Logic. And Pro Tools as well. Both are industry titans

Another great feature of the application is its easy plug-in manager system. You can integrate any 3rd party plug-ins with your existing plug-in. You can also create customized folders easily by simply going through the following simple options:

Logic Pro X Preference Plug-in Manger + customer folder

Tools of Logic – The quick swipe comping tool:

This tool with the upgrade makes achieving recording takes much easier and much more logical. Due to it’s importance, comping has always been something recording engineers have longed for. The ability to do take after take after take super fast! After recording all of your comps you can then select the best take. You’ll notice all of your takes named as such: Take 1 – Take 2 – Take 3 , e.c.t.

One of the downsides is that Logic on runs on mac. Since I’m a PC user this kinda upset me. But still, its a really solid DAW. It is well rounded and priced at fair price points.

Many consider Logic Pro X to be the best mastering environment. While Ableton is more of a live performance environment. This doesn’t mean you can’t do both in both programs. It’s just that the two DAWs shine where they shine!

ABLETON LIVE CHART

Concluding Ableton vs Logic Pro X

To sum up, the best music software is the one that is comfortable for you. You should choose the software based on your personal preference and the features available in the program. I would say that Ableton Live edges out Logic when it comes to a live situation. But in the studio and for mastering, we would give Logic Pro X the edge. This is very similar to Pro Tools.

All of the tools in Logic are based on pro studio work and tracking. Ableton Live focuses more on loop based recording in my opinion. But I do feel that Ableton is a bit more creative in a since that it’s fairly easy to put music and beats together without a hassle.

How to decide?

While Logic has some pretty good stock audio effects not seen in Ableton. Many of them are used widely by pros. As a result, this has put Logic at the top. In the new Logic Pro X version you’ll notice that they’ve cleaned up the interface a little. They’ve moved out some that clutter found in Logic 9. This has become especially relevant in today’s modern studios.

Garageband Vs Logic X

When it comes to using Virtual Instruments, I have found Ableton to be a bit more stable. Live and on stage is probably the main concept of Ableton. Furthermore, many performers trust Ableton when performing on stage with click tracks and other accompaniment music cues. Try it in a live situation and you’ll see what I mean.

Most of all, you’ll want to try these out for size your self. We’ve run our own test as well. Both Ableton and Logic are fine digital audio workstations.

Garageband Logic Remote

Because of the new rewire technology, there really isn’t a reason you can’t just use both programs! With all the ram available in today’s computers, you shouldn’t have a problem doing this with ease!
