Bought an IRIG I/O 49 key specifically designed for IPAD last year (For my son) However it charges and interfaces over the normal IPAD standard port. Its designed to be “plug and play” and easy to use with all of your gear — studio mics, vocal performance mics, guitars, basses, keyboards — whatever it is, iRig Pro I/O can probably handle it. It features a new 1/8″ stereo headphone out with preamp and level control, making it compatible with even the most recent iOS. Jul 30, 2011 I have the iRig working just fine on iPad 2 with GarageBand. Just plug it in and run the app GarageBand. It works nice for practice but its a little bit noise for recording. 
Honestly, recording via garage band is so amateurish it’s almost a joke. GarageBand and irig is a total waste of anyone’s time. Yes, It’s completely possible to record professional quality audio on your ipad but the first thing to do is forget about garage band all together and get the right apps and hardware.
